Private Jet to Peru: Lima, Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail

24 May 2025·5 min read

Peru has undergone a dramatic repositioning as a UHNW destination over the past decade. The drivers are multiple: Lima's emergence as one of the world's great gastronomy capitals (Central, Maido, and Astrid y Gastón consistently ranking in the global top ten), the extraordinary archaeological richness of the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, the unique Amazon ecosystem in the Manu Biosphere Reserve, and the otherworldly landscape of the Colca Canyon and Lake Titicaca. For UHNW clients who have exhausted the European and Asian circuits, Peru represents a destination with genuine depth and originality — and private aviation makes it accessible in a way that commercial connections to Cusco's high-altitude airport cannot.

Lima: The Gastronomic Capital of South America

Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) handles private jet traffic through FBO services managed by Swissport and LAN Cargo; the private terminal facilities are adequate for the size of the market. Lima has established an extraordinary reputation for gastronomy built on Peru's extraordinary biodiversity: the Amazon provides ingredients unavailable anywhere else, the Pacific coast provides the world's most productive fisheries (and therefore the finest ceviche), and the Andean highlands contribute ingredients like kiwicha, maca, and quinoa that have only recently entered global consciousness. Central (Virgilio Martínez's restaurant, ranked at or near the top of the World's 50 Best consistently) offers a tasting menu structured around altitude — each course represents a different Peruvian ecosystem from below sea level to above 4,000 metres.

The Barranco and Miraflores neighbourhoods — both clifftop above the Pacific, with the Larcomar mall and the huaca (pre-Inca pyramid) of Huaca Pucllana rising from the residential grid — provide the finest dining, boutique hotels (the Miraflores Park Hotel, the Country Club Lima), and art galleries (the MAC Lima). FFGR Jets recommends two nights in Lima minimum: one for gastronomy (Central or Maido reservation essential, 3-6 months advance booking), one for the Larco Museum (the finest pre-Columbian collection in private ownership, housed in a Spanish colonial building built on an Inca pyramid).

Cusco and the Sacred Valley

Cusco's Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport (CUZ) sits at 3,310 metres altitude — the highest at which most private jets operate without supplemental procedures. At this altitude, clients should plan at least 24 hours of acclimatisation before any physical exertion; the Belmond Palacio Nazarenas and the Inkaterra La Casona in Cusco's Plaza de las Nazarenas provide outstanding acclimatisation accommodation. The Cusco city circuit — the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral, the Coricancha (the Inca Temple of the Sun, covered in gold at the time of the conquest), the San Blas artisan quarter — takes a full day; the Sacred Valley requires a second day: the salt pans of Maras, the Moray terraced agricultural experiments, and Pisac Market are the essential references.

The private aviation structure for Cusco is: Lima to Cusco (LIM-CUZ) in approximately 75 minutes on a light jet or turbo-prop; larger jets require Juliaca (JUL, 45 minutes from Cusco by road) as an alternative. The Belmond Hiram Bingham train from Poroy (near Cusco) to Aguas Calientes (the town at the base of Machu Picchu) is the most atmospheric approach to the site; the train runs twice daily and the observation carriage is one of the finest rail experiences in the world.

Machu Picchu: The Logistics of the Wonder

Machu Picchu — the 15th-century Inca citadel at 2,430 metres, rediscovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham — receives approximately 2,500 visitors per day under the current access restrictions. Advance booking of entry tickets (through Ministerio de Cultura Peru) is essential: peak season (June-August) requires booking 3-4 months in advance. The site is divided into circuits; the Circuit 1 (Sun Gate, with the panoramic view of the citadel from above) and Circuit 2 (the citadel interior) are the most important. Sunrise entry (first slot, 6:00 AM) provides the most atmospheric experience before the crowds arrive.

The Belmond Sanctuary Lodge — the only hotel at Machu Picchu itself, directly at the gate — provides the extraordinary experience of being in the citadel after the day visitors have left. Rates are correspondingly premium (€1,500-€3,000 per night); the lodge has 31 rooms and is frequently fully booked 6-12 months in advance. For clients unable to secure the Sanctuary Lodge, the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel in Aguas Calientes (a cloud forest property 10 minutes from the Machu Picchu bus) is the reference alternative.

Lake Titicaca and the Amazon

Lake Titicaca — the highest navigable lake in the world at 3,812 metres, straddling Peru and Bolivia — is accessed from Juliaca Airport (JUL) in Puno. The Titilaka Lodge on a private peninsula on the Bolivian side of the lake provides extraordinary privacy and an extraordinary experience of the floating Uros reed islands, the island of Taquile (a UNESCO-listed textile tradition), and a sunset on one of the world's great bodies of water.

For the Amazon experience, the Manu Biosphere Reserve is the most biodiverse region on Earth by UNESCO classification: accessed via a domestic flight from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado (PEM), then boat transfer upriver. The Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica near Puerto Maldonado provides an outstanding Amazon experience without requiring the multiday boat journey into the core reserve. A complete Peru circuit — Lima (2 nights), Cusco-Sacred Valley (3 nights), Machu Picchu (1-2 nights), Lake Titicaca (2 nights), Amazon (2 nights) — totals 10-11 nights and is one of the most extraordinary UHNW itineraries available globally.
