Private Jet to Kenya: The East African Safari Circuit

8 August 2025·6 min read

East Africa by private jet is not simply a mode of transport — it is the architecture of the entire safari experience. The difference between commercial arrival at Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta and private arrival at Wilson Airport, followed by a chartered bush aircraft to a remote Maasai Mara or Laikipia airstrip, is the difference between a holiday and an expedition.

The International Leg: Nairobi by Private Jet

Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO) accepts private jets up to Ultra Long Range size and has dedicated FBO facilities through operators such as Signature Flight Support. Nairobi Wilson Airport (WIL) — 6 km from the city centre — is the hub for domestic and charter aircraft and is the operational base for the bush aircraft that serve the game reserves. Most UHNW safari itineraries route the international private jet to NBO, then transfer to Wilson by private vehicle (30 minutes) for the bush aircraft connection.

Direct private jet access to Maasai Mara, Samburu, or Laikipia is possible for aircraft that can operate on prepared grass or gravel strips — certain Pilatus PC-12 or Cessna Grand Caravan operators serve these routes. FFGR Jets coordinates the full East Africa programme: the international private jet from Europe or the Gulf, the Nairobi FBO arrangements, and the domestic charter connections to the reserve of choice.

The Safari Circuit: Maasai Mara, Laikipia and the Coast

The Maasai Mara — Kenya's most celebrated game reserve — is a 45-minute flight from Wilson Airport. The Great Migration, which moves through the Mara ecosystem between July and October, represents one of the defining wildlife experiences on earth. Private arrival by charter aircraft at one of the reserve's private airstrips, followed by direct transfer to a mobile camp in the heart of the migration zone, is the format chosen by clients for whom the experience is the priority.

Laikipia Plateau, north of Mount Kenya, offers a more exclusive alternative: lower visitor density, varied landscapes from forest to semi-arid plateau, and conservation projects to which private jet clients frequently contribute as part of their visit. Properties such as Segera Retreat and Ol Pejeta Conservancy combine wildlife access with contemporary luxury at the highest standard. The Kenyan coast — Malindi, Watamu, Lamu — offers a beach extension to the safari circuit with direct charter connections.

Timing, Costs, and the FFGR Jets East Africa Programme

The optimal window for Kenya is July–October (Great Migration, dry season) and January–February (calving season in the south Mara, fewer visitors). The rains of April–May and November are manageable but affect airstrip access in some reserves. A private jet from Europe to Nairobi — direct in a Global 7500 or via a single stop in Dubai in a Gulfstream G550 — costs from EUR 65,000–130,000 depending on aircraft and origin.

The full East Africa programme — international private jet, Wilson Airport transfer, domestic bush charter for 5–7 days, coastal extension if desired — is available as a managed itinerary from FFGR Jets. One conversation produces the full journey from your home airport to the bush airstrip and back.
