Private Jet Safety Standards: UHNW Client's Guide to Operator Certification

26 July 2025·10 min read read

Private aviation safety operates in a regulatory framework fundamentally different from commercial aviation — the absence of mandatory international certification standards means that UHNW clients must develop their own ability to assess operator safety culture. The voluntary certification programmes that have emerged to fill this gap — Wyvern Wingman, ARGUS Platinum, and IS-BAO — provide the most reliable independent safety signals available in the charter market.

Wyvern Wingman and ARGUS Platinum: The Gold Standard Certifications

Wyvern Wingman certification (the most rigorous third-party safety audit in private aviation, operated by Wyvern Ltd) requires operators to demonstrate: 1,500 hours minimum for captains, 500 hours minimum for first officers, annual proficiency checks, SMS (Safety Management System) implementation, FOQA (Flight Operations Quality Assurance) data monitoring, and a minimum audit score of 85/100 on Wyvern's comprehensive operations questionnaire. The database of Wyvern-certified operators is maintained publicly and updated quarterly.

ARGUS Platinum (ARGUS International, the highest tier of the ARGUS rating system which also includes Gold and Silver tiers) requires detailed operational documentation, maintenance record reviews, pilot background checks, and on-site operator audits. Both Wyvern Wingman and ARGUS Platinum-certified operators meet standards that materially exceed the minimum regulatory requirements in most jurisdictions. FFGR Jets exclusively works with Wyvern or ARGUS-certified operators for all UHNW client bookings.

IS-BAO and ICAO Standards: International Safety Frameworks

IS-BAO (International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations) is a code of best practices developed by the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC) — a standards framework applicable to corporate aviation departments and charter operators globally. IS-BAO Stage 3 (the highest tier) requires SMS implementation, FOQA, and a mature safety culture demonstrable through audit. IS-BAO is particularly important in markets where Wyvern and ARGUS have limited coverage — Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Latin American operators frequently hold IS-BAO rather than the North American-originated Wyvern/ARGUS certificates.

For UHNW clients operating globally, the safety architecture means: Western European and North American operators should hold Wyvern Wingman or ARGUS Platinum; operators in other markets should hold at minimum IS-BAO Stage 2 or equivalent. FFGR Jets' global operator network is screened against all three certification frameworks to ensure the same safety standard applies regardless of departure or destination geography.

Aircraft Age, Maintenance Records, and UHNW Safety Diligence

Beyond operator certification, aircraft-level due diligence includes: maintenance records (CAMP Systems tracking, the industry-standard predictive maintenance programme, should be current for any aircraft offered to UHNW clients); aircraft age (lighter jets and turboprops over 20 years should be avoided without specific verification; large cabin jets benefit from maintenance-intensive programmes that mitigate age); and avionics currency (ADS-B Out compliance is mandatory in US and European airspace; ADSB-In (traffic awareness) is a recommended safety addition).

FFGR Jets provides full operator and aircraft documentation to all UHNW clients prior to booking confirmation — Wyvern certificate, ARGUS rating, tail number verification, maintenance status, and pilot credential summary. The documentation package is standard, not on request. For clients who conduct their own aviation security review (common among UHNW and HNWI clients with aviation advisors), FFGR Jets provides the full operator compliance file directly to the client's aviation advisor.
