Private Jet to Private Islands: Necker, Laucala, Mustique and Beyond

15 May 2025·7 min read

Private islands represent the ultimate expression of seclusion in luxury travel. Whether you are arriving at Richard Branson's Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands, Castaways at Laucala in Fiji, North Island in the Seychelles, or Kokomo in the Fiji Mamanuca chain, the journey by private jet is not merely the preferred approach — it is often the only viable one. Commercial aviation cannot deliver the discretion, timing flexibility, and direct airport connectivity that island-hopping at this level demands. Private jet access transforms islands that feel dauntingly remote into destinations that are, in practice, reachable within a day from any major hub.

Necker Island: Richard Branson's BVI Enclave

Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands can be exclusively rented by a group of 30 guests and is reached via Beef Island Airport (EIS) or Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport — both served by private jet from Miami, New York, or via a positioning sector from a larger hub at San Juan (SJU). The island's 74-acre estate includes the Great House, Bali Hi, and Bali Lo accommodations set around a freshwater pool and coral-sand beaches. Connecting from Europe typically requires a refuelling stop at Bermuda or a non-stop ultra-long-range sector from London or Paris to Antigua (ANU), then a short sector to EIS. The Gulfstream G650ER and the Bombardier Global 7500 are both capable of the London–Antigua sector non-stop; from there, a smaller island-hopper completes the connection.

FFGR Jets coordinates Necker Island transfers as a complete programme: the transatlantic positioning sector, the island-hopper connection, and the return. Given the island's exclusive-hire model — where the entire island is booked by a single group — private aviation aligns naturally with the guest model: there is no commercial schedule to conform to, no shared transport, and no exposure to other guests. Arrivals and departures are timed to the group's programme, not the other way around.

Laucala Island: Fiji's Most Exclusive Resort

Laucala Island in Fiji, owned by Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz and operated as a 25-villa private resort, has its own airstrip (LAJ) capable of receiving light jets and turboprops. The standard routing from Europe requires a connection via Sydney or Auckland, where a Pilatus PC-12 or similar turboprop makes the final island sector. From the United States, Los Angeles or San Francisco are the typical connecting hubs. The island's relative remoteness is precisely its appeal — Laucala is positioned as one of the most private resorts on earth — and the journey time of 22-24 hours from Europe is accepted as part of the experience by guests who return regularly.

Laucala's private airstrip accepts aircraft up to a certain maximum takeoff weight; heavier jets require the connection from Nadi International Airport (NAN) in Fiji. FFGR Jets coordinates the complete sector plan for Laucala arrivals: the long-haul segment, overnight positioning if required, the Nadi-to-Laucala turboprop, and the return. Given the cost of exclusive villa rental at Laucala — which starts at several thousand US dollars per night per villa — the private aviation budget represents a proportionate fraction of the total trip expenditure.

North Island, Seychelles: The Indian Ocean Pinnacle

North Island in the Seychelles operates eleven villas on a coral island of sublime natural beauty — granite boulders, tortoise populations, and beaches of white coral sand. The island is reached via Mahé (SEZ), where a helicopter or light aircraft transfer completes the island approach. From Europe, Mahé is served direct by Air France, British Airways, and Emirates, but private jet access from Paris takes approximately 10-11 hours on a Gulfstream G650ER or Global 7500. The combination of the long-haul sector into Mahé and the helicopter transfer delivers guests to their villa in complete seclusion within a single travel day from Europe.

The Seychelles government imposes strict environmental controls on North Island access — light aircraft noise restrictions apply during certain nesting seasons — and FFGR Jets coordinates the logistics around these protocols, ensuring that island access dates are aligned with the helicopter and light aircraft operators who hold exclusive transfer agreements with North Island. Private jet positioning to Mahé typically involves an overnight in the Seychelles capital before the island transfer, providing an opportunity to visit the exceptional Plantation Club or the Four Seasons Resort Desroches Island en route.

Other Ultra-Private Island Destinations

Mustique in St Vincent and the Grenadines operates its own airstrip (MQS) receiving turboprops and small jets. The island's 100 private villas — including properties historically associated with Princess Margaret, Mick Jagger, and David Bowie — can be rented exclusively. Routing from Europe involves Barbados (BGI) as the connection hub; FFGR Jets manages the Heathrow or Paris to Barbados sector followed by the inter-island turboprop. The complete journey time from London is approximately 10-11 hours.

Fregate Island Private in the Seychelles — 16 villas on a 740-acre island — has a private airstrip accessible via helicopter or light aircraft from Mahé. Kokomo Island in Fiji, the Brando in French Polynesia (which has its own ATR-72 shuttle from Tahiti's Papeete airport), and the private island resorts of the Maldives — including Cheval Blanc Randheli and Gili Lankanfushi — all operate within the same private aviation logic: a long-haul sector to a main hub, then a short private transfer to the island. FFGR Jets has experience coordinating all of these itineraries and maintains operational relationships with the ground handlers at each of the regional hubs.
