Private Jet to Iceland: Northern Lights, Geysers and Glacier Landings

28 May 2025·5 min read

Iceland has evolved from an obscure North Atlantic outpost to one of the most sought-after UHNW adventure destinations in the world. The drivers are clear: the Northern Lights (October to March, most reliably visible far from Reykjavik's light pollution), the midnight sun (May to August, 24 hours of daylight), glacier hiking and ice cave exploration, geothermal spa culture epitomised by the Blue Lagoon and the new Sky Lagoon, and an extraordinary volcanic landscape that produces more geological drama per square kilometre than any other destination on Earth. Private aviation adds a dimension to Iceland that commercial air cannot: helicopter access to erupting volcanoes, glacier landings on the Vatnajökull icecap, and super-jeep expeditions to the Highland Interior (accessible only from June to October when the F-roads are open).

Arrival and Reykjavik Base

Keflavík International Airport (KEF) is Iceland's primary private aviation gateway, located 50 kilometres southwest of Reykjavik. The FBO at KEF is operated by Isavia Ground Services; the private terminal handles private jet arrivals efficiently with customs and immigration in under 20 minutes. Reykjavik's UHNW accommodation centres on the Ion Adventure Hotel (design hotel adjacent to the geothermal powerplant, Northern Lights visibility), the Hotel Rangá (southern Iceland, dedicated Northern Lights telescope and observation decks), and the extraordinary retreat properties in the countryside. The Reykjavik City circuit — the Hallgrímskirkja, the Harpa Concert Hall (Henning Larsen architecture, extraordinary harbourside setting), the Old Harbour fish market, and the Laugavegur shopping street — can be accomplished in a half-day.

For Northern Lights hunting, FFGR Jets coordinates charter by helicopter to locations 80-100 kilometres from Reykjavik — away from light pollution and with real-time aurora forecast monitoring. The peak aurora viewing season runs November to February; the equinox periods (September, March) also produce exceptional displays. Iceland's clear sky probability is approximately 40-50% in winter; the helicopter charter adds the crucial flexibility to reposition immediately when a clear sky window opens.

Glaciers and Volcanic Landscapes

Vatnajökull — Europe's largest glacier by volume, covering 8,100 square kilometres of southeastern Iceland — is the centrepiece of the Icelandic glacier experience. Private helicopter charter from Reykjavik or Höfn (HFN) Airport provides access to the glacier summit (1,800 metres), where a snow landing by helicopter is one of the most extraordinary private aviation experiences available. Ice cave exploration inside the glacier — blue ice tunnels carved by meltwater, accessible by super-jeep from the glacier edge at Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon — is only possible with a private guide and generally requires a 3-4 day advance reservation.

Iceland's volcanic activity makes it uniquely accessible for UHNW adventure: when a volcano is erupting (as Fagradalsfjall and Sundhnúkagígar have in recent years), helicopter charter provides the ability to view the lava flow from above and, subject to conditions, to land on older lava fields near the active zone. FFGR Jets maintains relationships with Icelandic helicopter operators who provide real-time volcanic activity briefings and can execute the charter within 90 minutes of a client request during eruption periods.

The Golden Circle and Geothermal Culture

The Golden Circle — a 300-kilometre loop from Reykjavik encompassing Þingvellir National Park (where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are visibly separating), the Geysir geothermal area (the Great Geysir, source of the word "geyser", and the more active Strokkur erupting every 5-10 minutes), and Gullfoss waterfall — is Iceland's most iconic one-day circuit. By private helicopter it becomes a four-hour experience; by super-jeep from Reykjavik, five to six hours.

The Blue Lagoon — a geothermal spa in a lava field 20 minutes from Keflavík Airport — has evolved into one of the world's most famous wellness destinations. The Retreat at Blue Lagoon (62 suites built into the lava field, with private pool connected to the lagoon, in-water massages, and extraordinary skin care treatments using silica and algae) is the reference UHNW address; it is frequently booked 3-4 months in advance. FFGR Jets coordinates Blue Lagoon bookings and airport-to-Retreat transfers as part of all Iceland programmes.

The Highland Interior: Summer Expedition

Iceland's Highland Interior — accessible only between June and October when the F-roads (unpaved mountain tracks crossing rivers) are open — is the most remote and dramatic landscape in Western Europe. The Landmannalaugar area (obsidian lava fields and hot spring bathing in the shadow of rhyolite mountains) and the Þórsmörk valley (accessible only by super-jeep with river crossings) represent the peak Highland Interior experiences. The Laugavegur Trek (55 kilometres from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk) is consistently rated one of the world's great multi-day hikes.

FFGR Jets structures Highland expeditions as helicopter-supported programmes: fly from Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar by helicopter (40 minutes), hike for two to three hours with a private guide, helicopter transfer to Þórsmörk, overnight at the Volcano Huts glamping facility, helicopter return to Reykjavik. This structure provides the Highland interior experience without the river crossing logistics of the super-jeep route and allows older or less mobile UHNW clients to access terrain that would otherwise require a full hiking expedition.
