Ultra-Long-Range Jets: Global 7500, G800 and the Non-Stop Revolution

18 April 2025·8 min read

The ultra-long-range private jet category — defined broadly as aircraft capable of flying more than 7,000 nautical miles non-stop — has fundamentally altered the geography of private aviation. Routes that once required a technical fuel stop in an intermediate city, adding hours of elapsed time and operational complexity, can now be flown in a single continuous arc. Dubai to New York. London to Singapore. Paris to Sydney with a single stop. The aircraft enabling this — principally the Bombardier Global 7500 and the Gulfstream G800 — represent the current apex of civil aviation engineering.

Bombardier Global 7500: Performance and Cabin

The Global 7500 holds the distinction of being the largest and longest-range purpose-built business jet in commercial production. Its certified range of 7,700 nautical miles at Mach 0.85 cruise enables non-stop flights on virtually all city pairs within the northern hemisphere and connects multiple intercontinental pairs without intermediate stops. Notable non-stop routing capabilities include London Farnborough to Singapore Seletar (6,700 nm), Dubai to New York Teterboro (6,800 nm), Paris Le Bourget to Los Angeles Van Nuys (5,650 nm) and Sydney to Los Angeles (7,500 nm).

The Global 7500's cabin is configured in four distinct living spaces: a forward conference suite, a centre living area, an entertainment area and an aft master stateroom with the proprietary Nuage seat-to-bed system. Total cabin length of 54 feet accommodates 13–14 passengers in the standard charter configuration. The aircraft's smooth-ride technology system uses active control surfaces to counteract atmospheric turbulence at the sensor level, maintaining cabin comfort in conditions that would produce significant motion in earlier generation aircraft. Powerplant is dual GE Passport turbofans, providing the fuel efficiency required for ultra-long-range operations.

Gulfstream G800: The New Benchmark

The Gulfstream G800 entered service in 2023 as the direct competitor to the Global 7500 and exceeds it on range: a certified maximum range of 8,000 nautical miles at Mach 0.85 enables routes beyond the Global 7500's capability, including non-stop connections between Australia and the United States and between the southern hemisphere and Europe. The G800's cabin, at 56 feet 9 inches, is marginally longer than the Global 7500's and features Gulfstream's characteristic panoramic oval windows, the largest in the industry, admitting a level of natural light that fundamentally changes the cabin environment relative to older-generation aircraft.

The G800's twin Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engines represent the latest generation of business aviation powerplant technology, incorporating advanced bypass ratio engineering for efficiency at ultra-long cruise. Gulfstream's Symmetry flight deck — incorporating the first side-stick controls in a large-cabin Gulfstream — provides pilots with a modern interface designed for the long duty cycles associated with ultra-long-range operations. The cabin's four living areas are configured with particular attention to overnight sleeping: dedicated stateroom spaces in the aft of the aircraft feature noise isolation from the forward sections and fully flat beds designed in collaboration with sleep specialists.

Other Aircraft in the Category

The Dassault Falcon 10X occupies a distinct position in the ultra-long-range category: a certified range of 7,500 nautical miles combined with a cabin cross-section that is significantly wider and taller than either the Global 7500 or the G800, creating the largest cabin volume in the category. Falcon cabins have traditionally emphasised interior space efficiency over range, and the 10X maintains this priority while extending range into the ultra-long-range definition. The aircraft entered service in 2024.

The Gulfstream G650ER, while technically preceding the G800, remains a significant ultra-long-range option in the charter fleet at a range of 7,500 nautical miles. Its combination of proven reliability, established maintenance networks and lower charter cost relative to the newest G800 makes it the practical choice for many ultra-long-range itineraries. The Bombardier Global 6500, with 6,600 nautical miles of range, occupies the entry point of the ultra-long category: capable on most major intercontinental city pairs with the exception of Pacific and Indian Ocean crossing routes.

Operational Considerations: Permits, Overflight and Crew

Ultra-long-range operations require precise coordination across multiple regulatory domains. Overflight and landing permits for non-stop routes traversing Central Asia, the Persian Gulf, Russian airspace (currently suspended for many Western operators), African states and Pacific island nations require advance applications through specialist permit agencies. Permit lead times vary from 24 hours for some jurisdictions to 10 days or more for others — a critical constraint on the booking flexibility that is central to private aviation's value proposition.

Crew complement on ultra-long-range sectors extends beyond the standard two-pilot configuration. Sectors exceeding 12 hours of block time require relief crew under most regulatory frameworks, meaning a three- or four-pilot complement. Cabin crew scheduling similarly requires careful management to ensure service quality throughout flights of 14–18 hours duration. FFGR Jets manages the complete crew coordination architecture for ultra-long-range charters including permit applications, crew rostering and in-flight service programming. For clients travelling regularly on ultra-long-range routes, dedicated crew relationships — a consistent pilot team that understands the client's specific preferences — can be arranged as part of a managed programme.
