Light Jets Explained: Citation CJ3+, Phenom 300E and When to Choose a Small Aircraft

25 May 2025·6 min read

The light jet category — approximately 4-7 passengers, ranges of 1,500-2,500nm, cabin heights of 1.4-1.5 metres — occupies the most commercially active segment of European private aviation. For sectors of 1-3 hours (Paris–London, Paris–Geneva, London–Zurich, Munich–Rome), a light jet provides true private aviation functionality at a third of the cost of a midsize or heavy jet. Understanding when a light jet is the right choice — and when it is not — requires clarity on the actual factors: group size, luggage, range requirements, and airport compatibility.

The Cessna Citation CJ3+: The Reference Light Jet

The Citation CJ3+ (and its predecessor, the CJ3) is the most widely operated light jet in Europe, with a global fleet exceeding 250 aircraft. The CJ3+ carries 6-7 passengers, has a range of 1,993nm (approximately 3,700km), and a maximum cruise speed of 416 knots. Key operational advantage: the CJ3+ is certified for single-pilot operation, reducing operator costs and improving aircraft availability.

The CJ3+ cabin (height 1.47m, width 1.47m) is compact but functional for pairs or groups of 4 travelling light. The aircraft accesses small airports that midsize jets cannot — Courchevel (CVF), Chambéry (CMF), Biarritz (BIQ), Perpignan (PGF) — making it the preferred choice for French ski resort and secondary airport access.

The Embraer Phenom 300E: The Premium Light Jet

The Phenom 300E is consistently rated the world's best-selling light jet (ten consecutive years at the time of writing). Its design prioritises cabin comfort within the light jet category: stand-up headroom of 1.51m, a flat floor, large windows, and a range of 2,010nm. The Phenom 300E carries 6-8 passengers depending on configuration.

The Phenom 300E's combination of range, speed (464 knots TAS at altitude), and cabin quality makes it the preferred light jet for sectors where passengers want the experience to approach midsize jet standards. FFGR Jets positions the Phenom 300E as the default recommendation for European sectors under 2,500km where the group size is 4 or fewer and luggage requirements are modest.

When Light Jets Are the Right Choice

Light jets are the optimal choice when: (1) the group is 1-4 passengers with 2-3 pieces of luggage each; (2) the sector is under 2,000km non-stop; (3) the destination requires small-airport access; (4) budget efficiency is a primary consideration; (5) the flight time is under 2.5 hours and standing cabin height is not essential.

Light jets are NOT appropriate when: the group exceeds 5 passengers; luggage is extensive (ski equipment, multiple bags); the sector exceeds 2,500km; weather conditions require the altitude performance of a heavier aircraft; or the client's expectation of the experience includes the ability to stand fully upright, a full galley, or a separate lavatory compartment.

Light Jet Economics: Understanding the Cost Difference

For a typical Paris–London sector, a Citation CJ3+ or Phenom 300E charters at approximately €4,500-€5,500 one way. A midsize jet (Citation XLS+, Hawker 900XP) costs €8,500-€10,000 for the same sector. A super-midsize (Challenger 350, G280) runs €13,000-€16,000. The cost differential compounds on round trips — a pair of Paris–London sectors on a light jet saves €8,000-€20,000 versus a heavy jet, with no meaningful difference in the experience for 2-3 passengers on a 1-hour flight.

FFGR Jets recommends light jets as the default for European inter-capital sectors under 1,500km for groups of 1-4. The cost savings can be redirected toward upgrading the ground programme — better hotels, private guides, dining reservations — producing a better overall trip experience at the same budget.
